Die Partei
Die Partei (The Party) also known as Fackelträger (Torch Bearer) is amongst the most widely-acclaimed works by the esteemed German sculptor Arno Breker, considered by many to be the ‘official’ sculptor of the Third Reich. He is known for his monumental works that expressed Nazi ideals of classical beauty, strength, and heroism, endorsed by the authorities as the very antithesis to degenerate art (Entartete Kunst).
Die Partei adorned the inner courtyard of the Reichskanzlei (Reich Chancellery) alongside its pair, the sculpture Die Wehrmacht (The Armed Forces), which together symbolized the two pillars of the Reich. Measuring approximately 41cm, the examples in our inventory are the original maquettes created by Breker in 1938 in preparation for their monumental counterparts that were built the following year.
The torch held in the sculpture’s hand represents the role of the National Socialist Party (NSDAP) as the guiding light of the nation, carrying the flame of hope for a new Germany.
