Eagle with Slogan

Eagle with Slogan

A large, imposing, period bronze Eagle set on a marble base embossed with the slogan “Ein Volk! Ein Reich! Ein Führer!” (One People! One Empire! One Leader!) referring to the mystical solidarity of Germany through blood, soil and the Führer. The party was seen as a unifying vessel to carry out this metaphysical consolidation with the eagle acting as the symbolic manifestation of both the party and Germany. The concept of Blut und Boden (Blood and Soil) emerged from a longing for a simpler era, when peasants worked their land in harmony with nature, and when tribe and territory were one. This mystical past had profound romantic appeal on both the wider population and political elites. Belief in a Germanic spirit—defined as mystical, rural, moral, bearing ancient wisdom, and noble in the face of a tragic destiny—existed long before the rise of the Nazis, with the composer Richard Wagner celebrating such ideas in his writings as well as appearing in the Nobel-winning novel Growth of the Soil.

Designed and manufactured for a wealthy military/industrialist German family who were significant financial backers of the Nazi party. Five such eagles are thought to have been produced for various members of this family. Cast in hollow bronze and mounted on a green marble base typical of many desk eagles of the time. Of the three such eagles known to currently exist, all are embossed with the slogan “Ein Volk! Ein Reich! Ein Führer!”  in German gothic script, with one example embossed in gold (reportedly for the father) and the other two, including our example, embossed in silver. In the 1980’s the eldest son of the family is said to have sold/gifted the five eagles to a close business partner in an attempt to cleanse his family’s Nazi past. Two of these were given away or sold off by this business partner early on while he retained the remaining three. These three were then sold around 2017, with one finding its way into our collection. The other two eagles sold in 2017 reside in private collections, while the whereabouts of the earlier two remain unknown.
