MVSN General’s Helmet
An Italian M33 helmet for a general of the Milizia Volontaria per la Sicurezza Nazionale (MVSN), commonly referred to as the Blackshirts. The MVSN was the main paramilitary wing of the National Fascist Party, and the Italian equivalent of the German Schutzstaffel (SS) after which the latter was modeled upon. Lacquered in black with a golden eagle clutching a Roman fasces, worn only by Generals of the MVSN. Italy was seen as heir to the ancient Roman Empire which was deeply revered by Italian fascists and which in turn inspired their aesthetics as they sought to emulate its grandeur. The centrality of ancient Rome’s role within the palingenetic national mythos of Italian Fascism cannot be understated.
