Samurai Postcard
Postcard issued by the National Fascist Party of Italy, commemorating the Japanese victory at Pearl harbor and the sinking of the HMS Repulse and Prince of Wales. Depicted here as an unstoppable juggernaut dominating the Pacific, the Armed Forces of Imperial Japanese is personified as a towering samurai unleashing its fury upon the Western navies. The subsequent fall of British Malaya and Singapore to the Japanese in 1942 would be described as “the worst disaster and largest capitulation in British history” by former Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Backed by the three flags of the main Axis powers, this postcard highlights the triumphant solidarity of the fascist triumvirate as they continued to enjoy victory on all fronts upon the initial outbreak of war. Illustrated by the famous fascist propagandist Gino Boccasile, who sided with the hardline Republican Fascists and continued producing material for them following King Victor Emmanuel III’s betrayal of Mussolini in 1943.
“By our side are faithful and reliable comrades-in-arms. The Italian people will unwaveringly continue with us on the road to victory under the leadership of their great Duce; the fascist doctrine has made it ready for all the great tests of destiny. In East Asia, the brave Japanese people inflict blow after blow on the Anglo-Saxon war machine. Three great world powers together with their allies lead the struggle against plutocratic tyranny.” – Joseph Goebbels (1943)
