Photo Exhibition of the SS
Poster from occupied Flanders advertising a photo exhibition for the Schutzstaffel (SS). The runic insignia of the SS can be seen flanking a sword to the backdrop of a Flemish lion, a longstanding symbol for Flanders dating back to the Middle Ages.
The occupying Germans embarked on a recruitment campaign in the many Western European territories they occupied, to bolster their armies serving on the Eastern Front. Flemish Waffen-SS volunteers in particular were noted for their combat effectiveness, with Hitler stating of the Flemish they “have indeed shown themselves on the Eastern Front to be more pro-German and more ruthless than the Dutch legionaries”.
