For Norway’s Reconstruction
Propaganda poster from German-occupied Norway (Reichskommissariat Norwegen) bearing the insignia of the fascist paramilitary Hirden, formed in part by raised sword. The slogan “For Norges Gjenreising” roughly translates to “For Norway’s Reconstruction” or “For Norway’s Regeneration”, and carries historical and patriotic connotations in the context of national recovery.
The Hird (or Hirden) served as the paramilitary wing of the fascist Nasjonal Samling, which administered Norway alongside German authorities throughout 1940-1945. Derived from the Old Norse term referring to a king’s ‘hearth-guard’, the Hird would, in similar fashion, function as the modern praetorian guard to party leader and former Prime Minister Vidkun Quisling. Modeled after Germany’s Schutzstaffel (SS), the Hird would also handle general administrative, security and propaganda duties within German-occupied Norway. This paramilitary and civil organization was to lead the nation’s reconstruction and restore Norway’s lost glory.
