King Heinrich

Himmler was unique amongst the Nazi leadership for his deep fascination with the occult. One belief held by Himmler, upon which this poster was based, was that he was the physical reincarnation of King Heinrich I, founder of the first medieval German state and conqueror of the west Slavic tribes. Claiming to be in psychic communion with the dead medieval king, Himmler considered it his divine mission to complete the work of Heinrich I’s Ostsiedlung, the eastwards expansion of the Germanic peoples into western Poland. Claiming upon cosmological grounds that an invasion of Europe from the East was imminent, Himmler considered it the destiny of his Schutzstaffel (SS) to repel this forthcoming assault. Acquiring a medieval castle to serve as the spiritual bastion of the SS, he amassed countless artifacts from Germanic prehistory within this castle, believing they would come to radiate magical power. The SS was to form the knightly nucleus in the upcoming crusade, whose inductees were destined to rule an Aryan Empire that was said to follow.
Accompanying Heinrich I is his royal coat of arms and a tribute to the fabled king by Heinrich Himmler:
“He [King Heinrich I] was the first among equals, and was met with a reverence greater and truer than ever accorded to the emperors, kings and princes that followed, all whom demanded it through alien Byzantine ceremony. He was called a duke and a king, and was our Führer of a thousand years ago.”
