Framed and autographed portrait of Dr. Joseph Goebbels, Minister of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda. Amongst one of Hitler’s most loyal followers, Goebbels held great influence over cultural life within the Reich, heading multiple state organs pertaining to the arts. A fervent writer, Dr. Goebbels was known for his many poems and a diary which he kept for over 20 years from 1923 until his death in 1945. His loyalty to nation, talented prose and fanatical zeal are encapsulated by the following quote attributed to him:
“One day soon National Socialism will be the religion of all Germans. My Party is my church, and I believe I serve the Lord best if I do his will, and liberate my oppressed people from the fetters of slavery. That is my gospel.”
The following typewritten note was found attached to the back of the picture frame, reading as a brief early biography:
“Dr. Joseph Goebbels was born on October 29, 1897, in Rheidt. His ancestors were Rhenish and Westphalian farmers. His thirst for knowledge drove him from university to university. He was unable to participate in the war [World War I]. In 1922, he heard Hitler speak and joined the Nazi Party. He became the managing director of the Rhine-Ruhr Gau. He moved to Berlin in 1926 and conquered Red Berlin. He founded the “Angriff” [Attack] and took action against the Jewish press. He became the party’s Reich Propaganda Director. In 1933, he became Reich Minister for Propaganda and Public Enlightenment.“
