5th Party Rally of the VNV

5th Party Rally of the VNV

A poster issued by the Vlaams Nationaal Verbond (Flemish National League, VNV), a catholic Flemish nationalist organization that later collaborated with Nazi Germany during the occupation of Belgium. The VNV rejected the illegitimate Belgian nation-state, and advocated for the unification of Flanders, the Netherlands and other Flemish regions in northern France into a single polity known as Dietsland, otherwise known as the ‘Greater Netherlands’.

This poster was distributed to promote their upcoming party rally to be held in the city of Ghent on May 21st, 1939. The city’s famous medieval landmark, the Gravensteen (Castle of the Counts) can be seen forming the backdrop to a knightly figure in the foreground. Presenting boldly above the scene is the symbol of the VNV: a circle representing the union of the Netherlands with greater Flanders, within which lies a triangle representing the delta formed by the Rhine, Meuse and Scheldt rivers.

Throughout the occupation of Belgium, the VNV was involved in the civil administration of Flanders and was also responsible for establishing the Flemish Legion, a foreign volunteer formation within the Wehrmacht and later, Waffen-SS.
